Laser cutting, or profiling, is the process of using a laser to produce clean, sharp and detailed cuts through a variety of metal types. The process is known for its speed, efficiency and the quality of the cut, being much cleaner and more precise than a mechanical cut. The process is diverse and easily adapted, and as such has found a place in the manufacturing economies of almost every industry. Laser profiling works equally well across a range of substrates, cutting materials such as high carbon steels as easily and efficiently as standard mild steels.
Due to this diversity and constant popularity as a manufacturing technique, Islebest has invested in a range of three Trumpf laser cutting machines; a 4m x 2m L81 6kw fibre laser, 3m x 1.5m 5kw Co2 laser and a K07 combination laser giving us total flexibility and even faster turnaround times.
Laser profiling works by melting, burning or vaporising material to create a line or area of molten material, and then employing an assistive gas to ‘clean’ the area of molten and burnt material or gas vapour, thereby creating the cut or shape. The choice of assistant gas is based on the material being cut; oxygen for carbon steels, nitrogen for non-ferrous materials, and argon for titanium and other exotic materials.
Modern day laser cutters are comparatively easy to use compared to their complex, labour intensive predecessors. The development of computer software to complement the machinery means that much of the process is now pre-programmed, requiring just one highly skilled operator to manage the software programming, sequencing and consistent repetition of patterns or designs.
